Capsule Endoscopy

About This Test

Capsule endoscopy involves swallowing a pill-sized camera that takes thousands of pictures as it travels through the digestive tract. It's particularly useful for examining the small intestine, which is difficult to reach with traditional endoscopy.

What It Evaluates

  • Evaluates: obscure GI bleeding, Crohn's disease, small bowel tumors, celiac disease monitoring

What It Can Detect

  • Detects: small bowel bleeding sources, Crohn's disease lesions, tumors, vascular malformations

Therapeutic Capabilities

  • Diagnostic only - may guide further treatment decisions

When Is It Recommended?

This test is often recommended when standard endoscopy and colonoscopy haven't identified the source of bleeding or to evaluate small bowel Crohn's disease.
