About This Test

Colonoscopy is the gold standard for examining the entire colon and rectum. A flexible tube with a camera allows the gastroenterologist to detect and remove polyps, take biopsies, and diagnose various colorectal conditions.

When Is It Recommended?

Screening colonoscopy is recommended starting at age 45 for average-risk individuals. Earlier screening may be needed with family history of colorectal cancer or symptoms.
