About This Test

Upper endoscopy, also called esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), uses a thin, flexible tube with a camera to examine the esophagus, stomach, and first part of the small intestine. It allows direct visualization and the ability to take biopsies or perform treatments.

What It Evaluates

  • Evaluates: persistent heartburn, difficulty swallowing, nausea, abdominal pain, bleeding

What It Can Detect

  • Detects: ulcers, inflammation, tumors, Barrett's esophagus, celiac disease, H. pylori infection

Therapeutic Capabilities

  • Can treat: bleeding, remove polyps, dilate strictures, place stents, remove foreign objects

When Is It Recommended?

Your doctor may recommend this test for persistent upper GI symptoms, screening for Barrett's esophagus, or investigating anemia or weight loss.
